Sensei Scott Ogonoski
Scott started boxing and kickboxing in 1992 under Canadian and Commonwealth kickboxing champion Daryl Duke, who at the time was the owner and operator of the Panther Karate Club in downtown Edmonton. Later that year, Scott joined the club’s Kempo Karate program under the guidance of Head Instructor, Sensei Gary Dawson. Scott trained in Kempo and kickboxing for the next three and a half years and was awarded his black belt in June 1996.During the summer of 1996 Scott traveled to Las Vegas to study Brazilian Jiu-jitsu under John Lewis at J-Sect Jiu-jitsu. The experience was a good initiation into the world of ground fighting and spurred an interest in the grappling arts that has lasted until this day. Over the next six years Scott trained in boxing, kickboxing, karate and jiu-jitsu, and was one of the principle karate and kickboxing instructors at the Panther Gym. In December 2003, Scott was awarded his second degree black belt in Kempo Karate from Yondan Sensei Gary Dawson.
Scott concentrated primarily on karate and boxing for the next couple of years, and, after competing in his last striking tournament in December 2005, took a 2 year hiatus from serious training to co-found a personal training business in Edmonton. Scott became a Certified Sport Conditioning Specialist and Personal Training Specialist in 2006. In 2008 he sold the business and returned once again to serious martial arts study.
Today Scott is studying classical jiu-jitsu with Sensei Stéphane Doré at the St. Albert Jiu-jitsu Dojo, and runs the kickboxing class for jiu-jitsu students held on alternating weeks from 8-9:30 pm. Scott is also currently the instructor of the “Little Ninja’s” (kids 4-6) on Saturday mornings.
